Operon HVAC/Take-off guide

Automated HVAC take-off software, explained.

Automated HVAC take-off software reads a mechanical drawing set and counts the equipment, duct, fittings, terminal units, diffusers, grilles, dampers and piping on every sheet, without an estimator clicking each symbol. Operon HVAC does it automatically, at 99% accuracy, processing 1,000 pages in 8 minutes, with every quantity linked to the sheet it came from.

What is an HVAC take-off?

An HVAC take-off is the count of everything a mechanical contractor has to furnish and install on a job, taken from the bid drawings. Estimators price the job from it, so a missed unit or a wrong duct run becomes margin given back after award. A full HVAC take-off covers:

  • Equipment: rooftop units, air handlers, fans, VRF and split systems, pumps
  • Duct by size, gauge and shape, with its fittings
  • Terminal units: VAV boxes and fan-powered boxes
  • Air devices: supply diffusers, return and exhaust grilles, registers
  • Dampers: fire, smoke, volume and backdraft
  • Piping, insulation and equipment connections

How does automated HVAC take-off work?

  1. 01Upload the drawing set: PDF sheets, scanned or native, any number of pages.
  2. 02Operon HVAC reads the legend and the schedules, so it counts in your drawings’ own symbols.
  3. 03It counts every sheet automatically and ties each quantity to the region it came from.
  4. 04It checks the counts against the equipment schedules and Spec Division 23, and flags what doesn’t match.
  5. 05Your estimator reviews the flags and exports the take-off to the spreadsheet or estimating tool you already use.

How accurate is automated HVAC take-off?

Operon HVAC’s take-off accuracy is 99%. Every quantity links to the sheet, region and symbol it was counted from, so an estimator can check any number in seconds. Quantities measured from a printed scale are marked provisional until a person confirms them, and anything the drawings don’t settle, such as a unit missing from the schedule, is flagged with a drafted RFI.

Who uses automated HVAC take-off software?

HVAC and mechanical contractors, their estimators and their project engineers. Teams use it to bid more jobs with the same people, to catch scope gaps between the plans, the schedules and the spec before bid day, and to keep every past take-off searchable for the next estimate.

Questions, answered.

  • PDF drawing sets, scanned or native: mechanical plans, schedules, details, duct and piping layouts, riser diagrams and the Division 23 spec.

  • Yes. Duct is counted by size and gauge with its fittings, alongside equipment, terminal units, air devices, dampers and piping.

  • No. It produces the quantities and the evidence behind them; your estimators price them in the tools they already use, with exports shaped to your templates.

  • Sign in at hvac.operonsolutions.com, or book a demo. Our engineers set up your workspace and templates, and your first take-offs run within three weeks.

  • No. Each company’s data is kept separate, encrypted in transit and at rest, and we never train models on it.
